Asian Metabolic Phenotyping Singapore (AMPS)
A core platform of the Singapore Institute for Clinical Sciences, A*STAR

AMPS is a research consortium which bring clinical and biomedical research groups and expertise together as an integrated platform to conduct translational clinical research in metabolic diseases like diabetes and obesity.

Centres involved in this program include the following:

  • Singapore Institute for Clinical Sciences of A*STAR (SICS),
  • National University Hospital (NUH),
  • Singapore General Hospital (SGH) LIFE Centre, and
  • Clinical Imaging Research Centre (CIRC)

AMPS and its team of investigators conduct studies to understand the metabolic phenotypes of Chinese, Indian and Malay populations and their different physiological responses to interventions.

Together with Clinical Nutrition Research Centre (CNRC – another core platform of SICS), the investigators were able to carry out clinical studies on the impact of nutrition and novel nutritional products on human physiology

Research Capabilities
Some of our research capabilities include:

  • Hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp for insulin sensitivity
  • MRI for visceral and subcutaneous fat volumes
  • MRS for muscle and liver metabolites
  • Indirect calorimetry for resting metabolic rate and diet induce thermogenesis
  • VO2 max
  • Doubly- labeled water for total energy expenditure
  • Percutaneous muscle biopsy / myocytes culture for in vitro studies
  • Subcutaneous and visceral fat harvesting and in vitro culture
  • Body composition assessment by bioelectrical impedance and plethysmography
  • Whole-body MRI in newborn / infants
  • Nutritional assessment
